It’s half-ton, light duty trucks that dominate the roads, but serious drivers, contractors, and commercial workers usually won’t settle for less than a heavy duty. Compared against a light duty, your average heavy duty truck will offer:

  • Greater Horsepower and Torque
  • Higher Towing and Payload Ratings
  • Superior Off-Road Performance

Light Duty vs. Heavy Duty

Trucks are the powerhouses of the automotive world, and heavy duty trucks are the giants of the class. Immensely capable, a heavy duty truck will boast more power than a light duty, plus higher towing and payload specs.

Just take a look at the Ford F-150 and Ford Super Duty:

  • Ford F-150: Harnesses up to 450 hp and 510 lb-ft of torque. Offers a 13,200 lbs. tow rating and 3,270 lbs. payload rating.
  • Ford Super Duty: Makes up to 925 lb-ft of torque. Offers a 32,500 lbs. tow rating with the Ford F-450 or F-350 and a 7,630 lbs. payload rating with the Ford F-350. Even with the F-250, you’ll tow up to 18,600 lbs. and carry up to 4,220 lbs.

But it isn’t all about power. Heavy duty trucks will also offer higher ground clearances and a greater range of off-road features to accommodate backcountry exploration.

Who Should Use Heavy Duty Trucks?

Heavy duty pickup trucks aren’t necessary if you’re only going to be driving around Osceola or Mishawaka as you would in a sedan. If you’re more likely to deal with commercial needs in Niles, a heavy duty truck can be excellent.

If you work in construction or in an agricultural setting, a heavy duty truck will summon the power and capability you need, and they’ll be better able to deal with driving away from paved roads. You might also consider a heavy duty truck if you need to tow large fifth-wheel trailers or medium-to-large boats.
