One of the most important is understanding how to jump start a car. Use this guide on how to properly jump start a car from the team at Jordan Ford to learn about the process. Keep in mind that Ford Roadside Assistance can also help in the event that you need jump start car service, and our Service Department is the place to go when you need a replacement battery.

Proper Way to Jump Start a Car

What is the proper way to jump start a car? First and foremost, you will need a set of jumper cables, as well as another vehicle readily available to provide a charge to your battery. When you’re ready, follow these steps:

  1. Make sure that the car with the charged battery parks so that the hoods of each car are close enough to each other. Both vehicles should have their parking brakes engaged.
  2. Pop the hoods of each vehicle and locate the batteries. If the battery cables aren’t immediately visible, you might have to remove a plastic hood to expose the battery terminals.
  3. Clean the positive and negative battery terminals, ensuring they’re free of any corrosion.
  4. Attach the jumper cables in this order – red clamp to the positive terminal of the dead battery; followed by the other red clamp to the positive terminal of the charged battery; then the black clamp to the negative terminal of the charged battery; then attach the other black clamp to an unpainted metal surface on the car with the dead battery.
  5. With everything connected properly and securely, have the driver of the vehicle with the charged battery start the engine. You can then start your engine.
  6. Once both cars are running, carefully remove the cables in the reverse order they were attached.
  7. Keep the engine running on your restarted vehicle for at least 10 minutes. This will help boost the charge and ensure the battery doesn’t die again.

What to Do If Your Car Won’t Jump Start

Unsure what to do if your won’t jump start? You may simply need a new battery, which you can secure through the Parts Department at Jordan Ford. However, if your car won’t jump start, there may be a more serious issue. Consider the following:

  • If your vehicle emits a clicking sound when you attempt to start your car, the starter may be broken. Schedule service with Jordan Ford near South Bend for assistance.
  • If the engine won’t start but other electrical systems activate, there may be issues with the ignition switch, the starter, or fuses. Get your vehicle checked out near Osceola at Jordan Ford if this is the case.
