Learn How to Reset a Check Engine Light

check engine light on

Unsure how to reset a check engine light? There are a few different reasons that it may have ignited as you drive the Granger streets, but if you already resolved the issue, the light simply becomes pesky and taunting. Follow this guide from the Jordan Ford Service Center to learn how to successfully reset a check engine light.

Resolve Any Larger Issues

Our first piece of advice if your check engine light turns on is to figure out whether there is an issue and have it resolved. We urge you to take care of the problem as soon as possible, for your safety and for the life of your vehicle. That’s because ignoring it will likely result in a bigger issue later on. Schedule service online with Jordan Ford to take advantage of experienced technicians near South Bend at a competitive price thanks to our service coupons.

Disconnect the Negative Battery Cable

Once you’ve had your car checked out and resolved any issues, you can try to manually reset your check engine light. To do so, all you need to do is disconnect the negative battery cable. Follow these steps:

  1. Make sure your car is shut off, and put on safety glasses and gloves.
  2. Identify the negative terminal of your car battery. You should see a black cap and a negative symbol, as compared with the positive terminal’s red cap and positive symbol.
  3. Using a wrench, loosen the nut on the negative terminal, and then pull the negative connector from the battery.
  4. Keep it disconnected for 30 to 60 seconds.
  5. Reconnect the negative cable and tighten it with your wrench.

When you restart your car, the check engine light should no longer appear on your dashboard.

Please note that disconnecting your battery may also reset your Ford SYNC® system.

Check Your Gas Cap

If disconnecting the battery didn’t work to reset your check engine light, then the issue may be that you have a loose or cracked gas cap, which causes the release of fumes. In turn, the engine light will illuminate. Once safely parked, remove your gas cap and screw it tightly into place. The engine light should turn off, but if not, try the aforementioned steps to disconnect the battery. You should be good to go from there!
