What Do Tire Numbers Mean?

Moving Tire

In short, these numbers indicate the size and type of a tire, as well as its particular performance purposes. Learn more about tire number meaning with Jordan Ford, your Granger-area resource for all things Ford and automotive service.

Decoding Tire Numbers

What do the numbers on tires mean? The series of letters and numbers imprinted on tires inform you of the following:

  • Size
  • Load index
  • Speed rating
  • Type of tire needed for maximum performance

Take this code as an example for decoding purposes and proper tire care: P215/65R15 95H

  • First Letter: In this instance, the P references P-Metric tire, so it is ideal for passenger vehicles. LT, on the other hand, stands for Light Truck, which is ideal for light-duty pickup trucks.
  • First Number Series: Following the initial letter code is a number series. Here, the 215 indicates the tire width in millimeters from sidewall to sidewall.
  • Numbers After Forward Slash: The aspect ratio code comes after the forward slash, which is 65 in this example. A tire’s aspect ratio represents the height of the tire’s cross section to its width. In this case, the 65 means the tire’s height is equal to 65% of the tire’s width.

  • Next Letter: The letter following the aspect ratio code represents the tire’s construction. This example includes an R, which indicates that the tire is a radial.
  • Next Number: The number that comes after the tire construction letter tells you how big the wheel is from one end to the other, which helps to determine the proper tire size. With 15 in this example, we know that the tire fits a 15-inch wheel.
  • End of Code: The last combination in the code represents load index and speed rating. In the example, 95 is the load index, informing you how much weight the tire can support (general range is from 75 to 105 for passenger vehicles). Meanwhile, H indicates how fast a tire can safely go based on the load capacity. A tire with the H rating reaches a maximum speed of 130 mph.
